SUMMARY:Sunday Speaker Series: Dr. Sarah Ebel ~ "Nos Falta Nada": What Does it Mean to Live the Good Life Under Changing Environmental and Economic Conditions in Southern Chile's Coastal Zone?
DESCRIPTION:Traditional ways of life in southern Chile’s coastal zone in many ways resemble Helen and Scott Nearings’ description of the “Good Life”\, where individuals’ cultural\, economic\, and social well-being are tied to the land\, the sea\, and the communities in which they live. However\, those ways of life are increasingly impacted by both environmental and economic change\, creating new challenges to and opportunities for living the Good Life. Dr. Ebel has been working in rural coastal communities in Chile for over ten years and will share her research on the resilience and adaptability of rural livelihoods undergoing global change along Chile’s coastal zone\, with implications for our own lives here in Maine. Her work demonstrates the deeply embedded resilience and connectedness people have to the places they love\, and the communities that continue to make and remake those places despite the hardships people face.\nDr. Sarah Ebel is an Assistant Professor of Environmental Social Sciences at the University of New England.

SUMMARY:Sunday Speaker Series: Margot Kelley ~ Gardening at the End of the World
DESCRIPTION:In March 2020\, as I was starting my seeds\, COVID shut down the world. Taking care of my garden took on extra significance for me that year\, as it did for so many folks. That outdoor work was complemented by research into the relationships we humans have long had with seeds and with viruses. As I dug into the histories of plants and pandemics\, I discovered many surprising ways the two are intertwined. I’ll share some of those co-evolutionary tales and talk about what they suggest about our interdependent world.\nMargot Kelley is an author and gardener.

SUMMARY:Sunday Speaker Series: Dr. Bonnie Newsom ~ Birds in Wabanaki Pasts
DESCRIPTION:Wabanaki people (Mi’kmaq\, Maliseet\, Passamaquoddy and Penobscot Nations) have a long and rich history of engagement with diverse bird species. Birds figure prominently in Wabanaki oral traditions and they are routinely visible in archaeological contexts throughout the region. This presentation explores the relationship between birds and Wabanaki people through a blended discussion of oral narratives and archaeological evidence. Dr. Newsom will highlight the cultural and practical roles of birds in Wabanaki lifeways and discuss how the human/bird relationship can inform our understanding of past ecologies.\nDr. Bonnie Newsom is a member of the Penobscot Nation and an archaeologist interested in the pre-contact lifeways of Wabanaki peoples. She is an Associate Professor of Anthropology\nand Associate Faculty in the Climate Change Institute at the University of Maine. Through her research\, Dr. Newsom seeks to humanize past peoples by exploring concepts of identity and human agency. Her current research centers on community-engaged archaeologies\, aboriginal ceramic technologies\, climate change\, and shell bearing coastal sites. Dr. Newsom’s professional history includes serving as the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the Penobscot Indian\nNation and as Assistant Director for UMaine’s Wabanaki Center. She has a strong public service record which includes serving as former Chair of the Repatriation Review Committee for the National Museum of Natural History and as a former member of the Maine Indian Tribal-State Commission. SUMMARY:Sunday Speaker Series: Kyle Warnock ~ Cultivating Community: The Power of Gathering Spaces & The Impact of Belonging
DESCRIPTION:Since the 1950s\, the United States has seen a steady decrease in gathering spaces that effectively foster meaningful\, long-lasting support networks and community belonging. As the country becomes more divided and individualistic\, we see an uptick in isolation and a decline in public health and well-being. In this talk\, explore the three components of community building Queerly ME employs to foster strong support networks and strengthen community belonging for LGBTQIA+ adults in Maine. Dive into what is needed for a gathering place to thrive and lead towards meaningful\, long-lasting community connections. This workshop will have a strong focus on the LGBTQIA+ community in Maine\, and the many sociopolitical obstacles challenging the creation and growth of gathering spaces and how we may overcome those challenges through collective action.\nKyle Warnock is a photographer and executive director and founder of Queerly ME.

SUMMARY:Sunday Speaker Series: Larry Dansinger ~ What Should the Economy Be For?
DESCRIPTION:Most of us believe we have no control over the economy (“we’re just along for the ride”) and that the current way the economy is structured now is our only option. Neither is true. But\, what IS the purpose of the economy now and\, maybe more importantly\, what SHOULD it be? These questions could be answered especially in light of our knowledge of the Nearings and their lives and beliefs. Results of our answers will be compared to a survey conducted at the polls on Election Day\, 2024. In small groups\, we can consensually re-define what the economy should be for and then at least begin to figure out (or even plan if there is enough agreement) how to re-make the economy as a group and/or individually. We’ll also identify ways to practice the new economy in our day-to-day lives.
