Kate Thompkins – Chickadee Composting

July 9 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Kate Tomkins grew up in Brooksville, attended local schools, and after college spent ten years working around the world in humanitarian aid and post-conflict development. Kate then worked in the Seattle area for a nonprofit dedicated to bringing seafood to food banks across the country. Kate returned home to the Blue Hill peninsula with her family in 2018, and now resides in Sargentville, where she wrangles all sorts of kids and pets, and occasionally finds time to focus on her compost business. Chickadee Compost was founded in 2020, and began operating at a small scale in 2021. Now a state licensed commercial compost company, Chickadee Compost collects food scraps from businesses, schools, towns, and households around the peninsula, on Deer Isle, and in Ellsworth and turns those scraps into high quality compost for use by local farmers and gardeners. Kate’s presentation will focus on the down and dirty of community composting in our rural area, and how Chickadee Compost fits into the growing movement of community composters across the U.S. Kate will discuss her cmpost creation company Chickdee compost and it’s goals on the Bluehill Penninsula. www.chickadeecompost.com kate@chickadeecompost.com
