Forest Farm in Brooksville, Maine, is the final homestead of Helen and Scott Nearing, the prominent back to the land proponents who wrote their now famous book “The Good Life.”
You can tour Helen and Scott Nearings' stone house with their extensive library, stone walled gardens, greenhouse, and grounds. There are also several yurts on the property built by the Nearing’s friend William Coperthwaite, founder of the Yurt Foundation. Helen and Scott’s books are available for sale, there are DVDs to watch, and donations are gratefully accepted.
Resident Stewards and our Property Caretaker will be present to guide visitors and provide information about sustainable and simple living practices. The historic gardens, grounds, and structures are lovingly tended by staff and our Resident Stewards.
This summer season we will continue the Nearing tradition discussing important global issues through our Sunday Summer Speaker Series. Please visit our Events page for more information.
Forest Farm is located at 372 Harborside Road, Harborside, ME 04642. Directions: A half hour drive from Blue Hill. From Blue Hill village, take Routes 176, 15, and 175 through South Brooksville, turn left onto Cape Rosier and follow the signs for The Good Life Center.
Thank you for your support!
The Nearing homesteads have always been places where people come to learn. Helen and Scott had a long history as teachers, both formally and informally. In their lifetimes thousands of visitors, many of them young people, arrived at their doorstep in order to hear about their philosophy, learn practical homesteading skills, and gain inspiration. Educational programs at The Good Life Center have been created to keep the Nearing spirit alive, inspiring each coming generation and exposing students to an alternative worldview and way of life.
