Lucy Marcus and Jordan Humphrey (2025 Season)
Lucy and Jordan met as graduate students in the Hollins University MFA program, nestled in Virginia’s Appalachian mountains. They return each year to teach a creative writing camp for high school girls. Lucy, born and raised in New York City, has always felt most at home in rural places. She has worked at several education nonprofits in the Chicago area and abroad. She writes fiction and has taught English at the Borough of Manhattan Community College for the past six years.
Originally from North Carolina, Jordan graduated from Yale Divinity School and has worked as a wilderness guide, hospital chaplain, interfaith minister, and, most recently, a farmer. He writes essays and fiction, and in his free time enjoys baking sourdough and playing the hammered dulcimer.

Together, they share a love of animals, reading, outdoor exploring, and vegetarian cooking. Over the past several years, they have traveled across the country as farm-sitters, looking after homesteads and farms, including an off-the-grid tropical fruit farm in Puerto Rico. They are excited to learn from living and gardening on the Maine coast and from Scott and Helen Nearings’ philosophy of living “sanely and simply in a troubled world.”
